Brief History

Late Sri T. Panduranga Pai son of Late Padmashree Dr. T.M.A Pai registered the Company — Manipal Industries (P) Ltd., on 23-09-1961 with a share capital of Rs.1,11,000/-. The first Chairman of the Company was Late Sri. Nagar C. Srinivas Rao.

The Company functioned as managers for General Construction Company, Madi Tile works, Maniwood Industries, Western Roadways etc. It also installed a Timber seasoning and Ascu/ Creosoting plant and also a saw Mill. This was the first Company to enter into the agricultural activities, starting a superior seed farm to cater good seeds to the farmers and do research work in this field, giving good technical advice to the farmers. Superior coconut and areca nut seedlings were produced and supplied to the planters. These activities were started at Madi Farm where the company held 64 acres of agricultural land. In 1965, the agricultural operations were carried out here in full swing adopting modern techniques of agricultural production using fertilizers, improved seeds, applying pesticides by aerial spraying by a helicopter etc.

Sri. Nagar C. Srinivas Rao resigned on health grounds as Chairman of the Company and Padmashree Dr. T.M.A Pai was co-opted as Director and Chairman of the Company from that date.

With Padmashri Dr. T.M.A Pai becoming Chairman, the Company was converted into a Public Limited Company with effect from 30-12-1967.

In 1975 two more tile factories were added at Hangaracutta and Sharavathi tile works at Mavinakurve (HONAVAR)

With the sad demise of Padmashree Dr.T.M.A Pai on 29-05-1979, Sri T.A. Pai joined the Board of Directors and became the Chairman. He by his dynamism, improved the working of the company and gave a new direction. However, he met with a sudden and untimely death on 29-05-1981. This vacuum has been filled up by Sri K.K. Pai, former Chairman of Syndicate Bank.

1. To enter into Civil construction activity and undertake and specialise in building educational complexes, housing activity using its own skill.

2. To open marketing and sales division under agency lines and cater to household durables, building materials etc competitive rates.

3. To develop road transport by owning fleet of lorries as back as 1962. This has since been stopped.

4. To introduce wood-seasoning, creosoting/Ascu plants thus help preservation of wood for a longer period. This was later copied by the State Govt. This activity was stopped as the availability of timber was not sufficient.

Director Sri T. Ashok Pai and Sri T. Harish Pai are authorised to look after the day to day management of the Company.

Presently, the Board comprises of five Directors who are eminent personalities with experience in the fields of Business Management, Marketing, Trade etc .
